US Classified Documents Leaked On Minecraft Discord Server
Apr 10, 2023
Recently reported by CNN, classified US Military documents were leaked on a Minecraft Discord server for a month before being noticed. The documents contained sensitive information on Russian casualties and weapon systems available to Ukraine. Aric Toler, a researcher at Bellingcat, expressed shock, stating that "This shit was sitting in a Minecraft Discord server for a month, and no one noticed."
The leaked documents gained attention after parts of them were posted on 4chan. On April 7, some members of the Discord server began to express concern about reposting the documents. Shortly after, the user who originally posted the documents on March 1 deleted their Twitter and Discord accounts.
According to US officials, the documents may have been altered to make the number of Ukrainian casualties seem higher than it actually is. Experts suggest that a foreign country such as Russia may be responsible for the leak, given the availability of both unedited and doctored versions of the files online.
The identity of the person responsible for the leak remains unknown, but the information contained in the documents could have serious consequences as it provides Russia with access to Ukrainian military strategies.
Security analysts who have examined the leaked documents found on various social media platforms have determined that the content extends beyond just classified material regarding Ukraine's war plans. In fact, the growing collection of leaked documents includes confidential briefing slides related to a wide range of topics, such as China, the military landscape of the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, and terrorism. The breadth of the leaked material indicates that it could have significant implications beyond the immediate concerns regarding Ukraine.
